3rd Feb - Table Topics
For those who are employed (or still in school), how many times have your colleagues/boss/teacher asked for your opinion in the midst of that discussion and you have to ratter off your 2 cents’ worth totally unprepared.
Table topics may pose as a challenge to some (including myself). Even the most seasoned speaker may not say anything relevant to the topic. But does it matter ? It does not really at all at Toastmasters. It is all about participation and building up your guts. Over time, such practices will improve your ability to think and compose your speech quickly.
I was honoured to host the Table Topics on 3rd Feb. And I had very good participation and amazing speeches from our new members and 1st time visitors. Many would have described my topics as “tough” and “huh?” but our speakers did not have much issues with them. They impressed all present with their confidence and impactful contents. They simply made all of us sit up !
For those who are curious how tough are the topics, here they are :-
1) A friend is one of the nicest things you can have, and one of the best things you can be.
2) Giving up doesn’t always mean you are weak. Sometimes it means that you are strong enough to let go.
3) The best way to predict your future is to create it. - Peter Drucker
4) Vacation used to be a luxury, but in today’s world, it has become a necessity.
5) Nobody trips over mountains. It is the small pebble that causes you to stumble. Pass all the pebbles in your path and you will find you have crossed the mountain.
Can you relate to these quotes ? Share with us your personal experiences.
Before I go, I just like to share some tips on how to handle such quotes - taken from Sam Choo, a fellow local toastmaster.
- Point - state your point of view about the question. Do you agree or disagree?
- Reason - give a reason for your view
- Example - give one or two examples (no more the three)
- Point - restate your point of view

Thanks for the mention. To reiterate the PREP method:
“I agreed that because…
For example…..
That’s why ”
This is the easiest method for starters. But this method don’t win medals because it is predictable. For contestants, go against conventional thinking so that you stand out from the rest.
